Paintbrush

April 1, 2014

Hi all, I know I’ve been off the blog for quite a while now, almost a month in fact. If you’ve been following me on Model Building Secrets Facebook page (and you really should ;) ) then you’ll know that I’ve been working on a huge project, 4 ft long huge to be exact. I am almost done with it, and should get back to more normal postings within a day or so.

Now I’m not into April Fool’s, so the only “prank” I’m going to play is that I won’t tell you what I’m working on. What I will tell you is that I will be at PAX East in Boston next weekend building my current project on site. So if you are going, come by and say hi.

Even though I don’t like April Fool’s Day, I did like this latest creation by Sean and Steph Mayo.

Paintbrush

At first it took me a moment to realize it was in fact actually LEGO. from the thumbnail I saw it totally looked like a paintbrush that had fallen onto the floor. The end of the paintbrush was what threw me, I had to figure out what it was. And then I saw that it was a Duplo grass part!

Examples like this remind me to never discount any LEGO part. You never know when it just might be the right one you need. :D

Building, Building, Building

March 3, 2014

Sorry for the lack of posts everyone. I’ve been so busy with commissions, which I will talk about as soon as I’m able, that I haven’t had much time at all for doing anything else including keeping up with my blog here. Its a good / bad thing. Good because I’m busy and have several projects going on at once. Bad, because I don’t get to post or write about all the news and new stuff that’s happening with LEGO.

This week there are two LEGO Conventions happening –

And BrickWorld Indy

Normally I’d be going to BricksCascade, but this year with all the work I have to do, I just can’t make it. My products — keychains and jewelry — will be available through BrickShirts at BricksCascade and through Milton Train Works at BrickWorld Indy. So at least part of me will be there. :)

I do post quick things on my Model Building Secrets Facebook page so be sure to like and follow it.

One of the things I’m kind of excited about is the announcement by LEGO Cuusoo that the issues with Doctor Who licensing have been resolved. In the few days since that was posted, several projects, including one by a friend of mine –

I urge you to support it and any others that strike your fancy. ;)

Also the first image of the rumored SandCrawler set has popped up — thanks to someone finding it in the new expanded LEGO Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary: Updated and Expanded

Via:BrickFan

More images will be popping up soon as I’ve heard it will be unveiled officially at BricksCascade. I do have the old SandCrawler — the only set to contain Jawas — and that’s the main reason I bought it. This one certainly looks better, but its also possibly $350 USD! If that is the price, that’s rather pricey in my opinion. I still haven’t picked up the Ewok Village. Its a great looking set — but at $250 I’m still on the fence with it. And since I have my jawas from the first one, I don’t know if I’ll be picking up one of these this time around.

So what do you think? Will you be picking up the new SandCrawler?

Make sure to brush your teeth

January 15, 2014

I know, I know. I’ve been MIA (missing in action) here on my blog for a while. If you’ve been following my Facebook Page or my Twitter feed then you know I’ve been working on a large model. It has a head, torso, arms and legs — but that’s all I will say till after I’m finished, which should be soon. So until I’m done, enjoy this cool model. ;)

You know, for teeth!

Carl Merriam has done it again with this over sized tooth brush. I love how he gets all the details of the bristles and rubber that makes up the head.

It makes me think of the giant tooth brush that I designed at LEGOLAND, sadly I don’t have any pictures. :(

It was for the Splash Battle Ride in the Pirates area of the park. If you’ve been to the park I’m sure you’ve seen the giant shark on the ride. Well one of the models that didn’t make it, but was designed, was supposed to go on the shark. The initial concept was of someone holding the mouth open, but I thought that joke had been done too many times so my idea was to have a cabin boy straddling a tooth in the mouth of the shark with a very nervous expression on his face and a giant tooth brush in his hand.

We got as far as designing most of the model, and I made both a two foot prototype and a four foot long toothbrush model with a big dollop of toothpaste, but for some reason the final version of the cabin boy was never finished and I have no idea what happened to the model. It still might be somewhere in model storage or it might have been recycled (yes that does happen), either way, I wish I had the pictures now.

My toothbrush was in no way as detailed as Carl’s, but it was still a fun project.

BrickCon Giveaway

October 5, 2013

Hi all! I’m having tons of fun a BrickCon. So much so that I haven’t had time to post anything. I haven’t even uploaded any pics yet except one rather fuzzy one on Facebook. I will be writing a post, all about my BrickCon experience later, but in the mean time, since I know how much everyone likes to get free stuff, I’m doing giveaway in honor of BrickCon. :)

I’m giving away one of my custom models. This is a glued model, but his arms and legs can bend and his head isn’t glued on so that you position it whichever way you like ;)

As always there will be three ways to enter:
1)Comment on this post
2)Like my Facebook Page, and then Like, Share, and Comment on my link about this post
3)Follow me on Twitter @MariannAsanuma and reply to my tweet about this post with the #ConGiveaway

Yes, you can enter once all three ways. I will leave the giveaway open till midnight October 12th (pacific standard time). This will be international, so as long as I can mail this to you, I will.

Have fun and good luck!

11th Doctor

September 17, 2013

I know I’ve been missing in action here on the blog, but if you’ve been following me on Facebook, and you really should be ;) , I posted yesterday that I’ve been getting ready for BrickCon with my newest mosaic.

Oh yes, bow ties are cool! Ever since Doctor Who returned to the airwaves on 2005, I’ve become an unashamed Whovian. As it is the 50th anniversary of the classic show, I figured I’d try my hand at portraying the current Doctor Matt Smith in my mosaic style.

LEGO 11th Doctor Mosaic 1

Overall the mosaic from concept to completion took about a week and a half. It actually took longer as I did the initial design 2 months ago, but I was too busy with commissions and LEGO conventions to actually get around to building it till just a few days ago. I started building Friday and just finished up an hour ago.

I posted a “teaser pic” on Facebook also
Teaser Pic 1

Several people correctly guessed that it was the Doctor. :D

People often ask what computer program I use. And although I do used a few programs to do the initial color values, I mainly design the mosaic by hand. Here’s what it looks like.

LEGO 11th Doctor Mosaic Plans

This will be debuting at BrickCon 2013 next month and if you are still thinking of going as an attendee you only have one more day to register, so get on it!

Comic Con Swag Giveaway #2

August 24, 2013

Considering my previous post, this one is a little ironic. But I had already planned to do this before I played the game, especially because Prima Games was awesome enough to send me a copy of the strategy guide so that I could give it away here. And I’m sure some of you will want to play this game so here’s your chance.

Chima DS Giveaway

As promised, here’s my second Comic Con Swag Giveaway. I didn’t get the guide at the Con, but I did make the contact there, so that counts right? :D

Comic Con Swag Giveaway #1

July 22, 2013

Okay, I’m still barely conscious. Too little sleep, and too much San Diego Comic Con. I will be doing a full recap as soon as I’ve gotten more than a few hours of sleep. ;)

You can read pretty good recaps on FBTB, but I have my own take on the Con and I’ll be tackling that soon.

If you’ve been following my Model Building Secrets Facebook page or my Twitter feed you’ve seen that I managed to get a nice bit of LEGO and building toy swag — enough swag that I’m willing to share :D

So here’s the first batch –
2013 Comic Con Swag 1

Yes its mainly MEGA BLOKS figs (and no, I don’t know which ones), but there’s a LEGO Star Wars Yoda Chronicles Comic and I’ll throw in a couple of my Folded Fancy keychains as well as a surprise or two.

Just like the last give away there will be three ways to enter:
1)Comment on this post
2)Like my page and then Like, Share, and Comment on my link about this post on my Model Building Secrets Facebook page
3)Follow me on Twitter @MariannAsanuma and reply to my tweet about this post with the #giveaway

This isn’t the only swag I got, so I’ll be doling the rest of it out in the next few months. So if you don’t win this time, don’t worry.

Have fun and good luck!

Happy 1,001 Posts!

May 30, 2013

Wow, so its taken me 5 years, but I’ve finally reached 1001 posts! This would have been my 1000th post, but then Tim had to make that awesome orchid, so it pushed this back a day.

My blog has had its ups and downs and I wanted to thank everyone that has been following me. So, I’m doing my first — but definitely not the only — giveaway.

Blog Giveaway

The lucky winner will get all that you see pictured, and I’ll probably throw in a couple of my Folded Fancy keychains as well.

There will be three ways to enter:
1)Comment on this post
2)Like my page and then Like, Share, and Comment on my link about this post on my Model Building Secrets Facebook Page

Yes, you can enter once all three ways. I will leave the giveaway open till midnight June 6th (pacific standard time). This will be international, so as long as I can mail this to you, I will. ;)

And since my Facebook page is also very near its 1000th Like, I will add a second giveaway to the mix should I reach 1000 likes or more before the deadline.

So let’s start this, and good luck! :)

Life-size Hobbit House

December 17, 2012

My jaw literally dropped when I saw this and all I could say was “WOW!”

It took a team of 12 model shop employees 3,000 hours to build this life size model of the LEGO Bag End set. In addition to containing over 2 million 1×1 bricks this model has working lights in the fireplace and over the bookstand as well as a chimney that really smokes!

The people in the picture give you a hint on the shear scale of this model.

Words fail me with this model, its simply awesome! You can find more pictures of this model at LEGO Shop’s Facebook page

Sneak Preview of Collectible Minifigure Series 9

November 26, 2012

On LEGO’s Facebook page they have release sneak preview pictures of all 16 Minifigs of Series 9. The catch? They are shown from the back. Even so, it confirms the rumored list that has been going around.

You can click on any of the images to go to the full set on Facebook. On December 3rd they will be showing the front images of them. I have a feeling that even though the release date is in January, they will start showing up in stores some time in December, just in time for Christmas. Its not a guarantee that it will happen, just a guess. ;)
