Micro Skull Mountain

October 17, 2009

Skull Mountain 1

My small entry in the Pillage the Village II: The Calm After the Storm. When I read that the small entry was a 8×8 stud max my first natural thought was Micro — which apparently no one had tried before. 😐

Here’s the story behind the MOC (My Own Creation)

After surviving twenty long years on the high seas, three mutinies (two of them he instigated), and being stranded on a desert island five times Captain Brickbeard has decided to retire and give up his life of plundering and pillaging — well semi-retire, you can never have enough plundering in your life. 😉

So to fund his retirement Brickbeard takes his "loyal" crew to Skull Mountain, a location known only to him, to retrieve his ill gotten gains.

Many have tried to find Skull Mountain and a few have even succeeded. Yet none have been able to possess the mounds of gold and treasure that lies within the heart of the mountain. All who have tried have met a grisly fate.

For Skull Mountain is also the home of a colony Gigantic Man-eating Spiders that owe their allegiance to Brickbeard. He alone can quell their man-eating tendencies and safely trespass on their land.

Brickbeard plans to load his fleet with the gold and leave all but his most trusted men to the fate of the Spiders.

The Spiders themselves have other plans however. They have begun to think of the gold and jewels as theirs.

The Storm may have passed, but for Brickbeard, another may soon be on the horizon . . .

Skull Mountain 4

It was a little tricky to make the Micro ships. The “X” 1×1 tiles were a perfect substitution for the Jolly Roger but I had to wrack my brain a bit to figure out the masts. It was a fun quick build. 😀

Peanut Butter Bricks Anyone?

October 14, 2009

Peanut Butter Bricks Anyone?

I was a little bored and in the mood for chocolate so I did a little experiment today. I tried my hand at LEGO peanut butter (chocolate) bricks.

I took the official LEGO ice cube tray (available on and at LEGO stores and LEGOLAND) and instead of water I put chocolate in the tray.

If you want to try this, here’s how you do this — (kids, get your parents help & permission) 😉

What you need:

Melting chocolate or chocolate chips
Peanut Butter (or some other filling)
LEGO ice cube tray

I filled it like you would any chocolate mold using warm melted chocolate. Trying to get into all the knobs at the top and all the edges. Don’t worry if the tray gets messy, people won’t see the tray. 😉 Then I popped it into the freezer for about 30 seconds to a minute (I didn’t really time myself 😛 ).

After that I pulled back out and scooped out the still soft middle (if its too hard you can remelt it and just leave it in the freezer for a shorter time).

Then I added the peanut butter. You could add any filling you like, I used chunky peanut butter. Be sure not to over fill it, you need room for the chocolate to cover it. So after the peanut butter, add the chocolate (I re-warmed it for about 20 seconds in the microwave first) and fill it to the top. 🙂

Pop it back into the freezer, wait a few minutes, and they’ll be ready!

Gently pry the chocolate from the mold, you can use a knife to trim the uneven edges.

Frankly chocolate works a lot better than water. The fact that it is a soft silicone tray makes it hard to keep the water in the tray while you move it from the sink to the freezer.

They taste really good and are super easy. Try it for yourself. I didn’t get all the knobs filled in quite right, but for a first try, I’m pretty happy with it. 😀

Underwater Panic

October 13, 2009

When I first saw this I misread the title and thought that it said “Underwater Picnic.” Upon closer inspection I realized the actual title and what the scene was about. What I think is kind of funny is that either title works. 😀

Ricardo Silva aka Evildead on Flickr has created this fun and expressive scene. I really like how he used the new fish element with trans lightsaber bars to suggest that they are swimming away from the underwater behemoth. And I really love how some of the submarine passengers look concerned while others are taking pictures or enjoying the unexpected entertainment. 🙂

Bonus Keychain at Gamestop when you pre-order LEGO Rock Band

October 12, 2009

I know that I’ve been focusing mainly on new LEGO product and not mentioning any of the cool MOC (my own creations) built recently, but with the holiday season fast approaching LEGO is pulling out all the stops when it comes to retail sales.

I wanted to let everyone know that Gamestop is having a promotion if you pre-order LEGO Rock Band. I first saw it at the store and snapped this picture:
Gamestop LEGO Rock Band Promotion

I thought it was really cool especially when I saw that it said “Pre-order today and receive this keychain.” But then I saw the little asterisk at the end and did a little more digging online.

What it actually looks like is this:

Still cool, just not the same. And the whole “Backstage Pass” concept is more indicative of game. But at the same time I can see why LEGO would go with an actual LEGO keychain.

LEGO Rock Band retails for $49.99 USD for Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and it retails for $29.99 for the Nintendo DS. The game will be available November 10, 2009.

New LEGO Star Wars Case for Nintendo DS Lite

October 11, 2009

Who doesn’t love LEGO Star Wars and Nintendo DS Lite? Well with this latest DS case you don’t have to choose. 🙂

Although there have been other DS cases and stickers for both LEGO Star Wars and LEGO Indiana Jones this is the first time that the case actually had LEGO elements on it. And what’s even sweeter is the awesome tile mosaic of the classic Star Wars scene.

# Protective carrying case for Nintendo DS Lite has two buildable LEGO surfaces for extra fun!
# LEGO surfaces work with any LEGO blocks
# Play-Thru design: play games while the system is protected in the case

Available at It retails for $14.99 UDS, ships worldwide (except Mexico, sorry for those of you South of the Boarder 😕 ) and is currently available for pre-order (product ships in November, just in time for Christmas).

Hopefully (fingers crossed) they are printed tiles and not some lame stickers that you have to put on. I’m not a fan of stickers versus actual printed LEGO elements.

Thanks Ace over at FBTB for pointing this out! 😀

LEGO Creator and Ben 10 Sets in 2010

October 10, 2009

I have always been a fan of the Creator line. Mainly because of the great part to price ratio and the fact that the sets are designed to make more than on model. Next year’s 2010 line is no exception. The set that I am most excited about is the new Creator House.

The most exciting feature is the fact that the roof is not the traditional red or black and instead is a very fetching dark blue. At $45 it is a tad expensive, but it seems that all LEGO is slowly rising in price (unfortunately). 😕

And, surprise, surprise, yet another red car. I don’t know what LEGO would do if they couldn’t create this theme staple. 🙂

Another new line that we are starting to see sets for are Ben 10. From the initial images (and forum responses) this looks a lot like the doomed-from-the-start Galidor line. I may be wrong, at least with Ben 10 it does already have a huge fan base. And even I have to admit that some of the elements might have their uses down the line. To me it looks like a cross between Galidor and Bionicle. However at $18 a pop, I won’t be buying them any time soon.

If you are interested in seeing more of Ben 10 you can check it out on Eurobricks.

First Look at Space Police 2010 Sets

October 9, 2009

The 2010 sets just keep popping up. I found out about these over at Eurobricks.

LEGO Space Police Raid VPR 5981

LEGO Space Smash ‘n’ Grab 5982

They both look like pretty cool sets. With the new alien in LEGO Space Police Raid and the purple elements in Smash and Grab I’m definitely adding them to my want list. According to they will be released January 1st.

If this year is anything like past years however, I have a sneaky suspicion that a great deal of these “leaked” sets that are due to release in January will more than likely start showing up on the the shelves just around Christmas time. (This is just my personal opinion, not a fact). 😉

One thing that I think is pretty funny about the new Smash and Grab set is what the alien is trying to steal — an ATM embedded in an asteriod (at least I think that’s what the set designers were going for).

You can see a zoomed-up version of the picture at Update: And if you look really closely you will see the new 1×3 tiles on the front. 8) (Thanks Bruce for pointing that out)

Tomorrow I’ll preview some of next year’s Creator line so stay tuned. 😉

This little piggy had a Farm

October 8, 2009

Although not quite as exciting as the new LEGO Atlantis theme, I still think this is note worthy in the fact that LEGO is adding yet another member to the Minifig animal population in 2010.

The image is not as crisp and clear as the Atlantis pics, but you can still plainly see what the set is all about — pigs.

When I saw this on Dano’s photostream I thought about adding it to yesterday’s post but then I decided that it deserved its own post. 🙂

What I think is interesting is that LEGO is following the lead yet again from BrickForge. BrickForge has offered both LEGO compatible cows and pigs as well as sheep for quite a while in several different colors.

The official LEGO version will obviously be different from the BrickForge version but that’s okay, they can just be different breeds. 😉

I own several of both the pigs and the sheep and I really like them. I have found BrickForge items to be high quality and worth the cost and I highly recommend them.

To be honest, I don’t usually pay as much attention to BrickForge and BrickArms as some of my male contemporaries for the simple reason that I’m not interested in weapons and armor. So although I do notice when new items are posted on Brothers Brick or Eurobricks I don’t always post them here.

One of the newest items that BrickForge has available for sale now that I think is quite fun — the mushroom.

Apparently the red ones were so popular that they are already out of stock! Hopefully they will get more soon.

BrickForge also has those fun scooters that have been popping up lately in several MOCs (my own creations). 😀

Everyone who has one seems to enjoy them, in fact I’ll probably order some myself pretty soon. I’m looking forward to the LEGO City Farm in 2010, but I’ll make do with my BrickForge ones till then. 😉

LEGO Atlantis — Better Photos

October 7, 2009

I mentioned earlier about the new 2010 theme LEGO Atlantis. We briefly got a glimpse of some of the sets at a Russian event called Festival Rossiyskogo Fan Forum before LEGO requested the images to be taken down. Well now because of Dano we can finally see what all the fuss is about. 🙂

Here you can see the new Minifigs

Check out the new trident and disk elements.

Here’s a close up of the new air tank helmet.

These sets and elements look like they have a lot of potential. I look forward to seeing them in real life soon. You can check out all the images here. 🙂
