The Star Flower

May 31, 2013

Wow, thanks guys for all the love on the last post. Of course it has nothing to do with me giving away free LEGO (wink, wink ๐Ÿ˜‰ ). Even so, getting so many responses, and some new readers is just awesome! And, my Facebook page has jumped from 924 likes to 966 likes, so there is a high possibility that we will hit 1000 likes before next week’s deadline — a.k.a. a possible second giveaway. So if you haven’t entered, read the last post and do so.

I now return you to your regularly scheduled blog post — ๐Ÿ˜€

Is it a star? Is it a ship? Its both! This awesome model was created by LEGO set designer Mark Stafford.

To me its a new model, but apparently Mark created this a decade ago —

10 years since I built this!

At the time there was a fad of building space ‘pods’, small one manned disk shaped spaceships. The story was that an Artist called Salvador Warhol had an argument that pod designs could be beautiful not just functional. He sketched his pod design on a napkin and ordered it from the Insectoid Ambassador, to be built as soon as possible in their vast hive spaceyards.

The napkin had some jelly on it, the ambassador ate it, but vaguely recalled how it looked and later delivered this to the artist. – who loved the interpretation and uses it constantly.

Weird story – weird build, strangely I returned to five directional building last year with the ‘Hand of Justice’ Space Police MOC. Maybe I’m running out of ideas!

I don’t know if there would ever be an actual set like this, but hey, you never know. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Happy 1,001 Posts!

May 30, 2013

Wow, so its taken me 5 years, but I’ve finally reached 1001 posts! This would have been my 1000th post, but then Tim had to make that awesome orchid, so it pushed this back a day.

My blog has had its ups and downs and I wanted to thank everyone that has been following me. So, I’m doing my first — but definitely not the only — giveaway.

Blog Giveaway

The lucky winner will get all that you see pictured, and I’ll probably throw in a couple of my Folded Fancy keychains as well.

There will be three ways to enter:
1)Comment on this post
2)Like my page and then Like, Share, and Comment on my link about this post on my Model Building Secrets Facebook Page
3)Follow me on Twitter @MariannAsanuma and reply to my tweet about this post with the #giveaway

Yes, you can enter once all three ways. I will leave the giveaway open till midnight June 6th (pacific standard time). This will be international, so as long as I can mail this to you, I will. ๐Ÿ˜‰

And since my Facebook page is also very near its 1000th Like, I will add a second giveaway to the mix should I reach 1000 likes or more before the deadline.

So let’s start this, and good luck! ๐Ÿ™‚

LEGO Orchid

May 29, 2013

My fellow LUGOLA member Tim Inman is usually known for his car or minifig scale building models. So when I saw this, I just had to post it.

I love how he took the purple minifig cape (okay, lots of minifig capes ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) and turned them into flowers.

He’s not the first person to do this, but I think its the first orchids I’ve seen done like this. I think what really makes it for me is how the stem bends and the technic ties to the “wooden” pole.

LEGO Jewelry Box

Lego Jewelry Box

I was looking on Flickr, which I hate the new interface by the way, and found this LEGO Jewelry Box by zaberca.

Its pretty darned snazzy! I love the gold fish as the feet of the box and its just plain fun. ๐Ÿ™‚

BrickWorld Chicago 2013

May 26, 2013

Hi all. I realize I’ve been totally off the grid for the past couple weeks. Finishing up a large commission (which will be covered later) and feeling under the weather has been keeping me occupied.

But I’m back now, and the only thing that’s on my mind at the moment is BrickWorld Chicago, which is just about 2 1/2 weeks away. I have a pretty awesome new mosaic planned, we’ll see how much of it I’ll get done before the show. Its in four parts, so even if I don’t get it all designed, at least some of it should be ready by then.

And if any of you readers are coming, either for the whole thing or just the public days on the weekend, stop by and say hi. I’ll have my vendor table there and I’ll be selling not only my own stuff, but also BrickShirts shirts so that’s a good place to find me, at least during public hours.

Oh and if you some how weren’t paying attention to any of the other LEGO blogs and sites out there, there was an unveiling of the largest LEGO Model ever in New York’s Time Square this weekend

As I wasn’t there, I defer to Joe Meno and his guest post on Brother’s Brick for all the details.

The exciting thing, at least for me is that now that the event is over, the giant X-wing will be coming here just in time for Star Wars Days at LEGOLAND California on June 15-16. Of course I’ll be in Chicago for BrickWorld, but it will be here for the rest of the year, so I’ll get to check it out soon enough. ๐Ÿ˜‰

And if you are coming to LEGOLAND California for the Star Wars weekend, then be sure to check out the LEGO display put on by LUGOLA, SandLUG, LGuage and FBTB.

Brick Blog Shirt

May 11, 2013

I found the coolest shirt at LEGOLAND yesterday and just had to have it. The only unfortunate thing is that they only have it in kids sizes. But the fortunate thing, at least for me personaly, is I can wear a child XL. Yes, there are a few times when being under 5 feet tall is a bonus. I really wish that LEGO and LEGOLAND would make some of the kids only shirts in adult sizes and I’m sure I’m not the only one that wishes that. But I’m lucky that I can wear them even when they don’t. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Walmart Iron Patriot Exclusive

May 7, 2013

So, have you seen Iron Man 3 yet? I just got a chance to catch it last night and it was just as fun as one and two.

One thing I was disappointed with **warning: slight spoiler** was that of the three Iron Man 3 LEGO sets, only the Malibu Mansion has anything to do with the movie. I realize that the sets are often designed while the movie is still in production, and perhaps there is a small chance that the other two sets may have been left on the Editing room floor, but considering the continuity of the movie, I really doubt that.

On that note, LEGO Marvel Super Heros the video game is coming out at the end of the year. And for this one Walmart, not Gamestop, has the exclusive figure — Iron Patriot.

Its a pretty sweet fig, although I still think that the helmets look a little on the big side.

Iron Patriot is available with the preorder of the game on PS3, XBox, or WiiU — all for just a hair under $50 each. Sadly it doesn’t look like it works for Nintendo DS or 3DS. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

The weird thing is that it says that the game will be available for shipment on Dec. 31st, everywhere else it says Oct. 31, which makes more sense. So we’ll see what the actual date is.
