Montague Channel

I’m not exactly sure what’s going on here, but I like it. ๐Ÿ˜€

This LEGO painting by Frances Sky is kind of mosaic, but also like a painting. Using the bricks as paint brush strokes.

Francesโ€™ artistic practice is rooted in abstract expressionism. She is also influenced by improvisation music such as Peter Van Huffel, and Aurealisโ€™ jazz sphere. Her paintings engage the viewer in a visual inquiry between atmospheric and lyrical qualities of the form and the hard physicality of material, Lego

Apparently Frances normally works in acrylic. You can see her work on her website francessky.wix.com/artist.

40056 Thanksgiving Set

September 23, 2013

So I was at LEGOLAND California today and I found this

40056 Poly Bag

I had seen a mention on BrickSet a little while ago, so I’ve been keeping my eyes open.

There’s 46 parts.

And the set takes all of 5 minutes to build.

40056 Set Built

It is a poly bag, so not too pricey at $7.99 USD. But it is well worth it for all the goodies!

The food elements in this set are awesome. I seriously thought about getting more than the 2 I picked up. I don’t know if there’s been such a small set that has such a nice assortment of LEGO food. ๐Ÿ˜€

I’m not sure if it will be available outside of the US, maybe Canada, since it is clearly for Thanksgiving. I certainly recommend buying it, especially if your minifigs get as hungry as mine do considering how little LEGO feeds them. ๐Ÿ˜‰

11th Doctor

September 17, 2013

I know I’ve been missing in action here on the blog, but if you’ve been following me on Facebook, and you really should be ๐Ÿ˜‰ , I posted yesterday that I’ve been getting ready for BrickCon with my newest mosaic.

Oh yes, bow ties are cool! Ever since Doctor Who returned to the airwaves on 2005, I’ve become an unashamed Whovian. As it is the 50th anniversary of the classic show, I figured I’d try my hand at portraying the current Doctor Matt Smith in my mosaic style.

Overall the mosaic from concept to completion took about a week and a half. It actually took longer as I did the initial design 2 months ago, but I was too busy with commissions and LEGO conventions to actually get around to building it till just a few days ago. I started building Friday and just finished up an hour ago.

I posted a “teaser pic” on Facebook also

Several people correctly guessed that it was the Doctor. ๐Ÿ˜€

People often ask what computer program I use. And although I do used a few programs to do the initial color values, I mainly design the mosaic by hand. Here’s what it looks like.

This will be debuting at BrickCon 2013 next month and if you are still thinking of going as an attendee you only have one more day to register, so get on it!

BrickCon is almost here

September 7, 2013

There is less than a month till BrickCon is upon us and even less if you want to register as a full attendee. The cut-off date is September 18th if you want all the benefits — goody bag, chance for door prizes, presentations, games, etc. For all you get, its well worth the $55 USD price.

But if you’re not as much of an AFOL (Adult Fan of LEGO), there’s always the Public Days on Saturday and Sunday. Of course if you weren’t a fan of LEGO you wouldn’t be reading my blog. ๐Ÿ˜€

There is a policy change this year, anyone under the age of 14 is no longer allowed as a full attendee

โ€œBrickCon is a convention for Adult Lego Hobbyists. Its focus is on building friendships and community through the sharing of time, ideas, building techniques and unique creations.โ€

You can read full details on BrickCon.com.

And don’t forget the epic struggle between Pigs versus Cows! Who will win in the battle across all themes?

I will be there of course, both as a presenter and as a vendor. I’ll have a bunch of my jewelry, keychains, and stickers for sale and Guy Himber will be on hand with Pig and Cow heads if you want to stock up and make your own bovine or swine army.

And of course I’ll be posting about BrickCon for those of you who can’t go. I know, I know. I still haven’t covered BrickFair or Bricks by the Bay. I’ll get around to it one of these days. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Siren’s Song

September 6, 2013

A Siren's Melody

Okay its technically called Siren’s Melody, but I like my title ๐Ÿ˜€

I love mermaids, always have, so I fell in love with this scene by Sean and Steph Mayo. What I love most is the fact that the mermaids are not minifigs. They are very cleverly built out of just a few simple bricks.

Of course the rest of the scene is awesome too. The use of the large clear panels and the round transparent blue and clear parts for the top gives a nice feel of moving water and the palm trees are brilliant.

2013 Holiday Sets

September 2, 2013

Well it may have barely turned September, but Christmas is coming early. Okay, not really, but these are the two limited edition Holiday sets that will be available this year at LEGO Brand Retail Stores and Shop at Home online (only in the contries with LEGO Stores).

The first one will be available October 14-31st with purchase of $99. The second one will be available Brick Friday (Black Friday) weekend with purchase of $99.

One good thing is that October is double VIP points month, so every dollar you spend is worth twice as much. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m not as excited for this year’s sets as much as last year’s set. But if you want to complete your LEGO Winter Village, then this is a must have. ๐Ÿ˜‰
