Horay for Girl Power!

February 25, 2010

The LEGO Vintage Minifigure Collection Volume 5 is all about the girls! For some reason its taken LEGO a very, very long time to acknowledge that girls like LEGO too. Until the last few years, female minifigures were few and far between as seen in this new Vintage Minifig Collection. Just the fact that this is the 5th collection and that all the previous ones feature only men might be an indication.

My opinion? Its about time! Feature girls, and not just in pinks! The newer sets have a much better male/female ratio. The new Harry Potter sets and the new Collectable Minifigs offer even more variety and hairstyles to delight even the pickiest female. Watch out boys, I feel the winds of change. 😀

2010 LEGO Preview from the Canadian Toy & Hobby Fair

February 6, 2010

On Kris Able’s Tech Life blog he recently paid a visit to the Canadian Toy and Hobby Fair and due to the over whelming response of his readers last year was good enough to take pictures of every LEGO set on display. 🙂

Included in the pictures was the first images of the Collectible Minifigures and their packaging.

He also mentioned something that I’ve heard rumors of but have yet to have seen any images of:

Not included are any sets from the upcoming Harry Potter release. LEGO didn’t have any mock-up boxes or prototype sets, but they will be releasing kits both for the Hogwarts Castle, the Hogwarts Express train, and other elements from that world.

From the rumors I’ve heard, there will be a LEGO Harry Potter line in conjunction with with the upcoming video game that will be released later this year.

There are lots more images on his blog including summer’s line of LEGO Atlantis and the new Duplo LEGO Disney Cars, so be sure to check it out. 😉

Collectable Minifigs Series 1 available June 2010

January 23, 2010

I mentioned in November about the possibly of Collectable Minifigs coming this year. Well now Brickset has posted detailed pictures of both the figures and the packaging.

I was already excited before I saw the close up images, but now I’m practically drooling (okay, not really 😉 ).

Apparently Mike Rayhawk was one of those who came up with this idea. He recently stated on Facebook:

They finally did the collectible minifigures idea that James Knight and Eugenia Chen and I pitched years ago – they told us it would never, never happen, but that was before Joergen took the helm. The luchador and the magician were part of my contribution to the original pitch; my caveman was still sitting on Cephas’s shelf last time I was in Denmark.

The only “problem” I see is that at the rumored $2 per unit price, people will be buying entire cases to ensure that they get all the figures or so that they can turn right around and sell the figures at outlandish prices.

The hardest thing to predict is what will be the most popular. I’m sure everyone who has seen these figures already has their favorites. Of course any of the exclusive elements that have never been produced before such as the cheerleader’s pompoms, the clown’s wig and trumpet, and the spaceman’s helmet and gun will go for more on the second market (i.e. Bricklink).

They are all exclusive, and the “Series 1” indicates that there will be more to come. I just hope that LEGO will be smart enough to not make them too exclusive so that everyone can get some! 🙂
