Darth Vader and Amidala Wedding Cake Topper

August 27, 2011

The words Darth Vader, flowers, and wedding don’t often come together, but in this instance they make perfect sense. πŸ™‚

On the heels of my earlier Star Wars Wedding Cake Topper, or more accurately because of it, I was asked to create the iconic symbol of the Dark Side Darth Vader and his lovely bride Queen Amidala standing in a field of flowers.

Okay, so Anakin married Amidala before he became Lord Vader, but heck Vader’s cooler than Anakin any day. πŸ˜€

I really wish the picture showed Vader better, but I still don’t know how to properly capture a black model. Even with extra lighting, it still mainly looks like a lot of black and you can’t see all the very cool details.

Even so, I can say that I’m much happier with my version versus the official on that is on display at LEGOLAND California

Although I have to admit I didn’t design the Vader helmet, that credit goes to my brother Mike Asanuma who also made the Stormtrooper helmet. He made both quite a while ago, and then challenged me to make the bodies. It just took me a while, and a request from clients, to get around to it. πŸ˜‰

Would brick roses smell as sweet?

Yellow Quartet of Roses 1

Recently I created some small flower bouquets. It may be a little early for Valentine’s Day, but even so, its better to be early rather than late. πŸ˜‰

The yellow rosebuds are the same as the roses I created for Max Harris last year only in a different color.

I was asked to create a smaller bouquet, but then I was asked if I could make open roses. This was the result:

I’m still not sure if I’m 100% happy with these, but they are the closest I’ve come so far. They are a little small at only two inches wide so now the challenge is if I can build a slightly larger rose with the same feel.

Two New Wedding Cake Toppers

July 14, 2010

A few months ago I started selling Wedding Cake Toppers on my Etsy shop Folded Fancy. Well just a little while ago I added a couple of additional cake toppers to my store.

The first one was requested by a customer. The second one I had been thinking of making but hadn’t gotten around to until now.

Some people on Flickr have contested that the arch design is “illegal” in building rules. From what I understand in set design sticking a LEGO plate between two knobs isn’t allowed, but when it comes to Miniland model building such rules don’t apply. Pretty much the only rule is it has to be able to be done without glue — in other words not “cheating.” πŸ˜‰

I’m pretty happy with the results and as I’ve already sold 2 of the Flower Patch one, I think others are pretty happy with them too. πŸ™‚

LEGO Flowers for Max

July 7, 2010

I was asked on Monday if I could create a model for the family of a very special little boy named Maxwell Harris who would have turned 10 tomorrow. Unfortunately Max passed away last week after a boating accident.

Max loved LEGO bricks. It was his favorite toy. On their family blog Harris Beach Bums it says “A holiday would not be a holiday without Legos.”

Max’s aunt Ashley asked me to create a bouquet of flowers as a gift for the family.

Ashley said this about Max:

His true love was legos. He probably would have grown up to be an artist such as yourself. He owned almost every set of legos and could create the most fabulous pieces of art

My heart goes out to the Harris family in their time of loss.

BrickForge: Pretty in Pink!

January 10, 2010

Now usually BrickForge and Pink don’t go in the same title. Up till now, the only things that were pink on their site was the pigs, and that’s to be expected.

BrickForge however has decided to get an early jump on Valentine’s — who doesn’t love a MegaGun or Space Marine Armor for their special someone? πŸ˜‰

We thought you’d like to get an early start on Valentines Day so we felt it appropriate to offer up some desirable delicacies. These are limited edition and most likely will not be restocked so pick’em up now!

I have to say I’m tempted, especially by the sheared sheep, it just looks so sad with all its fluffiness taken away (fluffiness not included).

Ah, a box of chocolates, a bouquet of flowers, and an army of Pink Space Troops, the perfect gift for that AFOL (Adult Fan of LEGO) in your life. πŸ™‚

Stopping to smell the flowers

September 6, 2009

With all the complicated techniques, the pizazz of the Ultimate Collector sets, and one builder trying to best another on the cleverness scale in LEGO building we sometimes forget to just make something small and simple.

That’s why Mike Stimpson’s “Flowers in a vase” appealed to me. With only a few pieces and great photography this picture really brightened my day. πŸ™‚
