San Diego Comic Con 2015 Post Recap and a Surprise Giveaway

July 15, 2015

Well, I survived another year at the San Diego Comic Con. It was either my 25th or 26th year (I’m still not sure if I started in 1990 or 91′). But who’s counting? 😀 **** Slight rant coming on ***** Read through till the bottom though, I promise, its worth it 😉 I feel a lot like this model when I go to Comic Con 20150708_184313

I realize I’m very lucky to have gone for the past quarter century, of course its only been in about the last 10-15 years where it went from being a fun Con to becoming the Mecca of all Pop Culture madness that it is today. I also realize that having the job that I do allows me to go to many conventions every year, its literally part of my job to be at them. However, this year I just wasn’t feeling the Comic Con love. I have to admit, I have a love/hate relationship with Comic Con. I love seeing all the cool things, great cosplay, and everything else that makes Comic Con worth visiting, but ever since Hollywood took over its just not as fun as it used to be. Maybe if I were younger (and I’m not that old), or maybe if I didn’t remember a time when you could easily walk up to the door a purchase your ticket that same day, a time when the legendary Hall H (where all the biggest panels are held) wasn’t near impossible to get into, and a time when there weren’t as many celebrities, but those that were here it was possible to actually meet without sleeping over night to get their signature. I don’t go to Comic Con like regular fans go to Comic Con, I mainly go to network and see friends that fly in to work Comic Con. It may seem like 5 days of fun, but believe me, its work. And by the end, when you feel like you’ve been run over by a Mach truck, that’s when you know you’ve survived Comic Con yet another year. I think part of the problem too is that now that I go to a lot of LEGO Conventions, I find that they are just way more fun. Sure they are smaller, but they are less hectic. No resellers, not as much drama. And we have better after parties too. ***** Okay rant over *****

So, back to the fun things about Comic Con. This year I focused mainly on LEGO naturally. I don’t go to many panels any more, mostly I just go to the LEGO ones and ones that my friends are on. And there was a heck of a lot of LEGO this year! Prominently displayed right across the street from the convention center was the LEGO Dimensions Display 20150708_141244

They took over the top floor of the Hard Rock Café and covered the entire outside. I have to admit, until I finally got to play the game I’d been on the fence about it. Sure it looked cool, but I wanted to sample the gameplay. 20150709_154327 20150712_111037

I watched the people ahead of me play the Scooby Doo level and then I played the Doctor Who level (both of which are available as expansion packs) I also got to see all the expansion packs — some will be available in late September, some in November and some in January

The game has the same feel as traditional LEGO video games but because of the reader platform, it also has a lot of new features that make it unique and much more than a normal LEGO game. Of course you need to buy all the expansion packs to play all the levels and characters, but who are we kidding, its LEGO and its a video game. Considering that I have all the other games, in both the PlayStation and Gameboy versions going back to the original LEGO Batman and Star Wars I’ll be getting it, and most likely getting it all. 😆 There are a lot more LEGO Dimensions pics on my SDCC 2015 Flickr Album. Another of the cool models was the life size Mstery Machine Mosaic with all of the Scooby Doo gang 20150709_093204

They also were selling all the new sets at the LEGO booth, I took pics but didn’t pick any up 20150708_190354

I will also be attending Emerald City Comic Con for the first time the week before that in Seattle March 1st-3rd. I’ll be talking more about this event soon. If you happen to be going to that, I will be at the BrickShirts booth or at the LEGO layout so come by and say hi. 🙂

The Coolness that is Sensei Wu

November 27, 2012

Sensei Wu 1

I love Dave & John Xandegar creations and their larger than Minifig life sculpture of Sensei Wu is just the latest of a long line of awesome models.

Sensei Wu 4

I think what I love most about this model is the feeling of movement, especially in the beard. And I love the how accurate the back of the legs are. 🙂

LUGOLA, the LA LEGO group will be helping out with the build. I would be up there too, but I can’t make it this weekend.

As you can probably guess, I’ve been pretty busy recently. Which is why I haven’t been posting much lately. And that’s also why I won’t be at the building event. One of my commissions is taking me to Florida this Sunday. 😀

I still don’t know if I will be able to post about this commission, I have to get permission from my clients, but as I will be heading down to the Sunshine State I plan on visiting both LEGOLAND Florida and the LEGO Imagination Center Store at Downtown Disney.

I have some pretty interesting commissions right now and I should be able to share some of them with you a little later so stay tuned. 😉

New watches at Walmart

November 16, 2011

On my recent trip to Walmart a small display in the jewelry and watches area caught my eye. I saw LEGO watches but they were different from any I’ve ever seen. There were two notable differences — 1. The packaging was thinner. 2. There is this a small minifig on the band of the watch.

The price is around $16 US and from what I saw there were 5 different designs (I didn’t take a picture of the Darth Maul one).

I almost wanted to get one. I have to admit without sounding like a girlie girl that I liked the pink one best. But that was mainly because I already have lots of watches (about 15 or so) from when I worked at LEGOLAND and I don’t need any of the other colors. I didn’t pick one up mainly because I don’t wear a watch anymore and even though I like the minifig on the band I can’t see much use for it other than as part of a watch. I’m sure someone will prove me wrong. 😉

Ninjago Graphic Novel Tops 150K Pre-orders!

October 10, 2011

Ninjago Graphic Novel
I just came across this.  The press release is almost a month old, but I thought it was worth posting again.

Official Press Release

Last May, Papercutz, the graphic novel publisher of GERONIMO STILTON, THE SMURFS, BIONICLE®, and DISNEY FAIRIES, announced that its newest series of licensed graphic novels would be based on the red-hot toy line LEGO NINJAGO. Three short months later, Terry Nantier, the publisher of the Papercutz, details that pre-orders for the first LEGO NINJAGO graphic novel, LEGO NINJAGO #1: The Challenge of Samurkai ($6.99) “are the strongest we’ve ever seen.” So strong in fact, that the pre-orders top 150,000 copies. This is a record-breaking achievement for Papercutz.

The LEGO NINJAGO graphic novels are written by Greg Farshtey, who penned the BIONICLE graphic novels (based on the LEGO property) To date, Papercutz has sold over 250,000 copies of its BIONICLE line. Paulo Henrique, who has illustrated Papercutz HARDY BOYS graphic novels, will provide the art for the new line.

The first 64-page, full color, 6”x 9” Ninjago graphic novel will have a cover price of $6.99 ($10.99 in hardcover) and will be released on November 8th, 2011. Three additional volumes are planned for 2012.

Ninjago Battle

January 4, 2011

Ninjago battlePhoto and model created by Legoagogo

Take a few figures and elements from the new Ninjago Spinjitzu Dojo mix in some Prince of Persia claw blades with back lighting and you get this awesome picture.

In some ways I’m not that interested in the new Ninjago sets themselves, especially the game aspect (even if that’s the main point), but what I am interested in is all the new elements — especially the printed ones. 😉

I’m a big fan of the original 1999 Ninja sets, so much so that I have pretty much the whole line and even multiples of several sets. These new sets on the other hand don’t jump out as must haves to me as a whole, but there are definite must have parts and new weapons that I will pick up. 😀

2011 Set Early Pics

September 19, 2010

I know we still have a few months of 2010 left on the calendar, but at the same time rumors of next year’s line have now turned into images. 🙂

If you want to be surprised, don’t read any further. And, as these are preliminary images, the quality isn’t all that great.

New Atlantis!!!!!!
Atlantis

I can certainly see wanting all of these! Especially the new 2×2 rounds! I’m surprised they had to make two waves of Atlantis before they made a set like what we were all hoping for. And new Series 3? What can I say, I’ll definitely want a box. 😉
